Personal bankruptcy is a common debt solution that allows you to clear almost all your debt, including income tax debt, credit card debt, overdue utility bills, lines of credit, and loans. [Learn more detailed information about what assets you can keep in your province.](https://grantthorntonlimited.ca/en/debt-help-resources/articles/article-what-assets-can-i-keep-in-bankruptcy) **Exemptions specific to Nova Scotia include:** - One motor vehicle owned outright with a value of $6,500 or less. - Household goods up to a value of $5,000. - Medical and dental aids required by you and your dependents. - Tools of the trade (i.e., tools, equipment, books, computer) needed for your occupation, including farm equipment and fishing nets, up to a value of $7,500. - All grain, seed or livestock that are used domestically by the household. - DPSPs (Deferred Profit-Sharing Plans). ## **Other debt relief options** available in Nova Scotia - **Orderly Payment of Debts:** This debt repayment option is *not* offered by Doane Grant Thornton but can be administered by provincial credit counsellors in Alberta, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Saskatchewan. An Orderly Payment of Debts combines your unsecured debt into one monthly payment with an interest rate of 5% to be paid back over three years. Certain types of debt, such as income taxes or business-related debt, can’t be included. - Credit counselling:** Credit counselling is a nonprofit service that helps Nova Scotians who are struggling with their finances. Your credit counsellor can help you with budgeting, financial literacy or managing debt payments through a debt management or settlement plan. - **Debt consolidation:** Debt [consolidation loans](https://grantthorntonlimited.ca/en/debt-help-resources/articles/consolidation-loan-vs-consumer-proposal-whats-the-difference) are offered by lenders like banks and combine some or all your debt into a single monthly payment.
